One of the biggest summer movies of the 90s, Independence Day (ID4) managed to wow audiences with honestly old-fashioned special effects done extremely well. There is CGI in the movie, but it's used very sparingly. Shields and stuff, all (blog post) the ships are actually miniature models. Seriously.
